History

Founded in 2010 by Jack Phillips and Thomas H. Davenport, the International Institute for Analytics is an independent research and advisory firm that works with organizations to build strong and competitive analytics programs.

Since its inception, IIA has worked with more than 200 organizations from around the world, sharing the keys to analytics maturity so that our clients gain an edge in an economy increasingly driven by data. Through IIA’s in-depth research library, moderated phone briefings, webinars, and events, our clients get the guidance and expertise needed to compete on analytics and win.

Jack Phillips
CEO and Co-Founder

Jack Phillips is a noted advisor and writer on the impact that business analytics and big data have on enterprises. Mr. Phillips founded the International Institute for Analytics (IIA) with Tom Davenport, and currently serves as its CEO. Mr. Phillips edited the 2012 book Enterprise Analytics: Optimize Performance, Process and Decisions Through Big Data.

In his work at IIA, the leading independent analytics research firm, Mr. Phillips focuses on how the adoption of data and analytics by certain firms leads to competitive differentiation and higher performance. Mr. Phillips speaks frequently on cultural changes, organizational models, talent acquisition and the requirements of new leaders in a data-driven world.

Mr. Phillips is a graduate of the Harvard Business School and Williams College, and lives with his wife and three children in Portland, Oregon.

Bill Franks
Chief Analytics Officer

Bill Franks is IIA’s Chief Analytics Officer, where he provides perspective on trends in the analytics and big data space and helps clients understand how IIA can support their efforts and improve analytics performance. His focus is on translating complex analytics into terms that business users can understand and working with organizations to implement their analytics effectively. His work has spanned many industries for companies ranging from Fortune 100 companies to small non-profits.

Franks is the author of the book Taming The Big Data Tidal Wave (John Wiley & Sons, Inc., April, 2012). In the book, he applies his two decades of experience working with clients on large-scale analytics initiatives to outline what it takes to succeed in today’s world of big data and analytics. Franks’ second book The Analytics Revolution (John Wiley & Sons, Inc., September, 2014) lays out how to move beyond using analytics to find important insights in data (both big and small) and into operationalizing those insights at scale to truly impact a business. He is an active speaker who has presented at dozens of events in recent years. His blog, Analytics Matters, addresses the transformation required to make analytics a core component of business decisions.

David Alles
Vice President

David Alles is a Vice President with the International Institute for Analytics and leads the company’s analytics maturity assessment service line. He brings over two decades of executive, product development and business strategy experience leading teams at rapidly growing technology companies. David has experience at leveraging a wide variety of technologies (Big Data, platform-as-a-service, streaming analytics, IoT) across a number of industries (energy analytics, building automation, SaaS applications, electronic design automation, and manufacturing). David has a BS in Industrial Management from Carnegie Mellon University.

John Ott
Vice President, Client Success & Sales

John Ott is the Vice President of Sales and Client Success at the International Institute for Analytics. John’s extensive background in strategic account development, channel creation, and managing client success teams makes him a natural fit for IIA as we look to dramatically grow our client base.

John brings over 25 years of experience driving sales growth for companies ranging from venture funded startups to those listed on the Fortune 500. He has lead worldwide sales teams for technology companies that included both direct and indirect sales channels. He has extensive experience with IoT, Saas products and services across a wide variety of industries.

John started his career as an electrical engineer. One of his first projects included the design and development of advanced digital communication satellites at Ford Aerospace. John received his BSEE from Brigham Young University.

Linzie Reynolds VanWieringen
Director, Marketing

Linzie Reynolds VanWieringen is the Director of Marketing at the International Institute for Analytics. Linzie is an accomplished marketing leader with both agency and in-house experience, who has helped implement marketing strategy into manufacturing, automotive and technology companies. She brings experience that will drive strategic positioning, branding and market growth to IIA.

Linzie’s love for marketing started at a young age as she helped her parents with their business and has continued to work with organizations to grow their market presence. She graduated from Pacific Lutheran University with a BBA focused in Marketing. Linzie spends her free time with her family, volunteering or enjoying the outdoors.

Doug Mirsky
Vice President, Analytics Strategy

Doug Mirsky, PhD, is the VP of Analytics Strategy and Head of IIA’s Research and Advisory Network. He brings broad experience working across industry verticals with the benefit of numerous years focused in analytics, financial services and life sciences. Prior to IIA, Doug spent seven years with Gerson Lehrman Group (GLG) where he held executive roles in operations, business development, strategy and consulting. He has also held roles in medical education, television production, clinical roles in spine surgeries and was an Assistant Professor of Anatomy and Physiology at CUNY and SUNY. Doug has a PhD from the University of Chicago in Evolutionary Anatomy.

Tom Davenport
Co-Founder and Advisor

Tom Davenport is a co-founder and advisor of IIA. He is the President’s Distinguished Professor of IT and Management at Babson College, and a research fellow at the MIT Center for Digital Business. Tom’s “Competing on Analytics” idea was named by Harvard Business Review as one of the twelve most important management ideas of the past decade and the related article was named one of the ten ‘must read’ articles in HBR’s 75 year history. His most recent book, co-authored with Julia Kirby, is Only Humans Need Apply: Winners and Losers in the Age of Smart Machines.

Cheryl Krane
Board Member

Cheryl Krane currently is a portfolio advisor to Irving J Levin and his investment vehicle, Fluffco LLC. She has structured and managed equity and debt investments in private companies for Fluffco since 2002. Prior to working with Irving Levin she founded and raised $4.5mm in angel capital for Poppybox Gardens, a start-up gardening retailer. Prior to that she was a consultant to the venture industry and worked as a venture capitalist for ten years at BancBoston Venturues. She also worked in marketing for two high technology companies. She has held numerous board seats and currently sits on the board of International Institute of Analytics. She received a B.S. / B.A. from Boston University and a M.S. from the MIT Sloan School of Management.

Andy Walter
Advisor

Andy Walter is a business results-driven professional with extensive experience in strategy, development, execution, and operations across Shared Services and IT.

He led the Commercial Services & Delivery Organization (over 1500 IT and multifunctional professionals) for Procter & Gamble’s Global Business Services (GBS). He was responsible for IT & Shared Services for all Global Business Units and Markets around the world. His team was accountable for developing cutting-edge digital capabilities for Procter & Gamble to win “where it matters most,” with Consumers, Shoppers, and Retailers. This included all eBusiness, Consumer Services, BI/Analytics, Sales Force Solutions, Project Delivery, Business Process Services, and A&D / Company restructuring efforts. He has over a decade of leading top tier Global Shared Services globally and is a Certified Outsourcing Professional with the IAOP.

He has over 15 years working on Boards and in Board level advisory roles. As a member of the Digimarc Board (Nasdaq: DMRC) and Board Audit Committee, he is advising on company strategy and execution into the Consumer Goods & Retail environments. Across numerous non-profit board (GS1, Ovarian Cancer Alliance, Cincinnati Museum Center, Multiple Sclerosis Society) and Private Company Board & CEO strategic level advisory roles (Fractal Analytics, Virtualitics LLC, Verix, RapidMiner, SignalsAnalytics, ItemMaster, TriCentis, Lingaro) he brings leadership, industry & functional expertise, operations, an incredible personal network, Digital Transformation, and strategic thinking to the critical business challenges facing companies.

Steve Woit

Steve Woit has served on the board of the International Institute for Analytics since 2011. Steve worked for 17 years with International Data Group (IDG), the largest global technology media, market research and strategic intelligence company. He is the founder of Riga Ventures, a consulting and venture capital firm investing in media, market research and strategic intelligence companies as well as early-stage Internet and software companies since 1999. Steve was the founder and former director of the BioPharma Executive Council. He also served on the board of directors of Greentech Media (GTM Research) for four years until its sale to Verisk Analytics in 2016. His past venture investments include Carbonite, the leading online backup company; Bitpipe, a technology industry online lead generation company; Quova, world’s leading geolocation company; docTrackr; Interactive Supercomputing; and 02138 Magazine, which served the Harvard alumni community.
